Choosing the Right Acne Products
If you’re ready for acne products, it’s important to do your research before deciding what to use. What is important to remember though, is that what works for one person may not work for someone else. Different acne products contain different active ingredients, which react differently based on your skin type. Before finding the perfect acne products for you, you may have to test a number of different active ingredients to find the best one.
How to Choose Acne Products
When it comes to purchasing acne products, they are basically grouped into over-the-counter and prescription medications. The severity of your acne is what will determine what type of product you need. For mild to moderately severe acne, you should start with over-the-counter treatments. If you have severe acne, or have tried over-the-counter acne products and they don’t work, you should see your doctor about prescription strength treatments.
Common Ingredients Found in Acne Products
Before making any purchases, you should take some time and research what is available. Many different brands contain similar ingredients, so you don’t want to fall into the trap of thinking you are trying something new, when in fact the acne product is basically the same except it has been made by another company. Reading labels and researching ingredients are important to finding the best acne products for you.
Not only are the active ingredients important, but so are the concentration levels found within the product you are looking at. Many companies offer different acne products with varying levels of the same active ingredient. When you start a new treatment, it is a good idea to start with a low level dose and work your way up. It’s important to remember that if the level of ingredient isn’t working for you, it could be the concentration level and not the ingredient in the product.
In most cases, over-the-counter acne products will contain one of the following four ingredients for fighting acne:
- Salicylic acid – For mild acne or those with sensitive skin. Salicylic acid breaks down dead skin cells and cleans pores. Moderate or severe acne suffers may use products with salicylic acid prior to using other acne products to clean and prepare the skin.
- Benzoyl peroxide – Best for moderate to severe acne as it penetrates deep into the skin to kill the bacteria that cause inflammation in blocked pores.
- Glycolic acid – Good for all skin types to heal and prevent acne. An alpha hydroxyl acid that is usually found in cleansers and peels away the top layer of dead skin cells.
- Sulfur – Sulfur also kills the bacteria that causes inflamed acne blemishes. Products that contain sulfur are often used for spot treatments.
Your skin type and the severity of your acne are the two main factors you should consider when choosing which medication to use.
