Everyone talks about pregnant women having a glow and that was something that I was looking forward to when I became pregnant with my first son.  However, what I soon discovered is that instead of the pregnancy glow, I experienced a very different “joy” of pregnancy…pregnancy acne!

Acne During Pregnancy Is Common

After talking to many of my friends who were, or who had been pregnant, I learned that many pregnant women are bothered by sudden flare-ups of acne during pregnancy, even if their skin had been clear for years. It seemed that, as well as many other changes in my body that will occur during pregnancy, I could expect changes in my skin as well. After the initial frustration at these changes, I learned from my doctor that most cases of acne during pregnancy are triggered by the huge hormonal fluctuations that occur within the body during pregnancy and, while this was not exactly great news to me and my pregnant friends, the fact that pregnancy acne usually disappears after delivery was a comfort. Many of us hadn’t had to worry about acne since our teens or early twenties so thinking about acne was yet another of the things we would have to deal with during our pregnancies…along with our expanding waistlines and our swollen feet!

Solutions for Pregnancy Acne

Since we were experiencing this unexpected aspect of pregnancy together, we decided to solve it together!  We read articles and talked to our doctors and it seemed that we all came back with the same information.  As always, common sense is usually the best approach and so good basic skin helps keep the skin healthy even during the breakouts of pregnancy acne and washing our faces morning and night with a gentle cleanser was fairly simple to do, even while pregnant! Also, avoiding toners or astringents is a good idea because we learned that our skin might more sensitive during pregnancy. And, because any form of acne is often the result of the skin producing excess oil to compensate for dryness, we found that using a light moisturizing cream would help with that. For some of us, this routine was enough to keep our pregnancy acne in check.  But, for some whose acne was worsening as their pregnancy progressed, or those who had been battling acne since before pregnancy, an acne treatment medication was necessary. The most important thing we learned is that, for the health of our developing babies, we needed be very careful when selecting acne products. While many acne treatments are safe for pregnant women (including Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic acid and Erythromycin), certain acne medications should never be used by pregnant mothers because they can harm a developing fetus. In particular, we learned that the treatments that must be avoided during pregnancy include: Accutane and Topical retinoids (like Differin, Tazorac and Retin-A).  Also, Tetracycline (as well as its derivatives Doxycycline and Minocycline) should not be taken while pregnant.

One of my pregnant friends, who had battled acne through most of her adulthood, suggested that we try Proactiv, a 3-step system that was developed by dermatologists and that both helps clear existing acne and prevent future breakouts.  She had been using Proactiv for years and it had worked really well at keeping her acne under control…so much so that none of us had even realized that she had an acne problem until we all came together to solve our pregnancy acne problem!  And, since the active ingredient in the Proactiv products is Benzoyl Peroxide, we thought it would be a good product for us to try. Pimples are also often formed due to poor personal hygiene. When the face, or other areas of the body, is not washed properly, or often enough, dirt and oils become trapped inside the body’s pores. Once the pores are filled with dirt and oil, they become clogged and get built up with sebum. The secretion of sebum is what leads to, and causes, the actual pimple to appear.  Stress is also a common cause of acne outbreaks and the culprit behind numerous pimples. When a person becomes highly stressed his/her body becomes agitated and the body naturally produces more adrenaline. The adrenaline causes the sebaceous glands to produce extra sebum, which causes the production of pimples. What Causes Pimples?

The outer layer of the human skin is constantly being shed and discarded. More often than not, the skin sheds easily and leaves behind fresh, undamaged skin.   • If pimples persist and are a constant problem it is highly recommended to go visit a dermatologist and have him/her access your skin and which products and course of treatment are best suited for you and your skin type.

AcneScarRemoval3Like an unwanted house guest who, after finally leaving your home, you discover has trashed the guest room, acne scars are the ultimate dermatological double-whammy and, although there are many acne scar removal treatments and procedures, the very need for their existence feels rather like adding insult to injury.

After all, it’s bad enough to have had the acne in the first place. But scarring as well?! Really?!

If it all seems so unfair that’s because it often is. A large part of the unfairness is simply the result of genetics.

Some people are genetically more prone to scarring than others depending on how their immune system responds to inflammation. That is often the reason why some people either don’t appear to scar at all or else seem to possess some Wolverine-like swift healing ability that renders any scarring so minor as to be almost unnoticeable. They’re not doing anything special or clever – they were just lucky in the genetic lottery of life.

Having said that, regardless of whether you are naturally prone to acne scarring or not, there are some simple things you can do to prevent scarring from occurring in the first place or, at least, to ensure that scars that do appear are kept to a minimum and not made any worse than they need to be.

The first of these is: don’t pick at your skin. More acne scars are the secondary result of people picking at themselves and thereby causing a secondary round of inflammation than are the result of the primary acne cause. That doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze the occasional zit if it can be done quickly and easily (if it can’t be “popped” easily, beware: you risk driving the bacteria and sebum even deeper into your skin), just don’t pick at it afterwards. Especially, don’t pick at scabs.

Scabs are there for a purpose; they are nature’s band-aid, and if you scratch them off too early you are greatly increasing the chances of scarring. Secondly, stay out of the sun or else where sunblock. Ultraviolet light causes scar tissue to become darker. The result is that not only do the scars appear more noticeable, the darkened tissue is more resistant to your body’s natural healing process.

However, although these preventative precautions may reduce the damage going forward, the fact remains that our metaphorical house guest has still left us with a trashed guest room, and we still have acne scars that we want to remove. What are the treatments? Happily enough, there are many.

The problem, though, is knowing which are best suited to treating your particular kind of acne scarring. That’s because acne scarring can take different forms, each of which has different causes.

What Causes Acne Scarring?

Scarring occurs when the dermis becomes damaged. With acne, this is primarily caused by inflammation that results from pores becoming blocked by bacteria, dead skin cells and oils which, in turn cause the pore to swell and rupture the skin tissue. What happens next is that the skin tries to mend the damage by producing a protein called collagen.

And this is where the scarring can occur, and basically there are one of two general problematic outcomes. Either (a) due to tissue damage caused by inflammation not enough collagen is produced, or (b) too much collagen is produced.

Types of Acne Scarring

Going back to the trashed guest room analogy, when the body produces too little collagen, the result is a bit like using too little plaster to fix a dent in your dry wall. Your skin fails to produce enough tissue to cover the hole, and you’re left with an indentation or depression in your skin.

Commonly, these either take the form of shallow pock mark type depressions referred to as “box car” scars, or else they can take the form of deep, jagged indentations referred to as “ice pick” scars. Alternatively, a third type of scar may occur called a “rolling” scar. These tend to be shallow and wide, and look like waves. They are caused when the outer layer of skin is effectively pulled down by the formation of tissue beneath it.

Alternatively, though somewhat less commonly, when the body produces too much collagen the result is more like using too much plaster to fix the dry wall; instead of a depression, you are left with a raised wavy bump due to excess scar tissue. These are known either as “keloid” scars (keloid being the medical term for scar tissue) or “hypertrophic” scars.

In addition to these four types of acne scar, there is a fifth – although, in truth, this is not actually an acne scar at all. This is sometimes referred, misleadingly, to as a “pigmentation” scar. Pigmentation “scars” are not scars; they are merely a temporary and entirely normal discoloration of the skin where the acne spot once was. For people with fair skins, these are usually pink colored spots; for people with darker skins, they appear as brown. These “scars” will fade quite naturally over six to twelve months.

Acne Scar Removal

1. Laser Treatment

Laser treatments are effective for removing box car, ice pick and rolling acne scars. There are two main types of laser treatment. The first of these involves a process of “resurfacing” or “ablating” the skin in which the laser removes the outer layer of skin and scar tissue.

Although this kind of laser treatment is certainly highly effective, it is not without its downsides. For a start, it’s not cheap: resurfacing laser treatments can cost several thousand dollars per treatment. Also, the skin is left looking red for several days and may require the application of bandages and/or ointments.

A less drastic laser alternative is a non-ablative process by which the laser warms the skin’s middle layer which has the effect of gently tightening the skin. As well as being gentler on the skin, this process is gentler on the wallet with treatments generally costing around $400-$500.

2. Subcision Treatment

Effective for rolling acne scars, subcision is a relatively simple process by which the scar is cut loose from the underlying tissue by means of a scalpel. The downside is that bruising is likely to occur. The upside is that the cost could be as little as $100.

3. Punch Treatment

Punch treatments are effective for removing box car and ice pick scars. And, no, the dermatologist doesn’t actually punch you. The “punch” refers to the scar’s indentation or depression on your skin. Punch treatments can take a couple of forms.

The first of these is “punch excision”, in which the scar tissue is surgically removed and the skin then sutured closed. The second is “punch grafting” in which the scar tissue is removed and replaced by skin taken from another part of your body. Costs run to around $200-$300.

4. Steroid Injection Treatment

Effective for treating keloid or hypertrophic acne scars, steroid injections are exactly what they sound like. The steroids work to counter inflammation and reduce the scar. The good news is that these are relatively cheap (around $50 a time), but the effects are not permanent and need to be repeated. Steroid injections may be accompanied by the additional external application of liquid nitrogen that freezes the scar and causes the scar tissue to die.

Unfair, unwelcome, and double-whammy as they may be, the good news is that, like unwanted and badly behaved house guests, acne scar removal is possible.

Natural Acne Treatment

naturalacnetreatment3Despite a wealth of tradition and popular observation, natural acne treatment methods remain relatively under-researched – especially when compared to the vast fortunes that big pharmaceutical companies pour into funding so that people in white lab coats can research and publish on synthetic treatments.

The reason for this is obvious enough: big pharmaceutical companies don’t earn money from natural acne treatments or remedies. If this sounds cynical, so be it.

However, the fact remains that any number of the magical ingredients that make up synthetic potions, creams, and unguents are to be found existing quite naturally and organically in stuff that is sitting in your fridge, in your pantry, or on the shelves of your nearest neighborhood grocery store.

Now, just because we’re talking about fridges, pantries, and grocery stores, don’t go getting the impression that we’re going to be recommending things to eat. Of course, diet plays a crucial role in the overall, holistic treatment and prevention of acne.

However, what we’re going to be looking at is acne treatments that can be applied directly to your skin as a treatment for acne; treatments that are found naturally in organic products .

1. Food Treatments


Honey has a been used for its medicinal properties since ancient times, and for good reason. Honey is a natural antibiotic and antioxidant, both of which properties provide a two-prong benefit for treating acne. Honey’s antibiotic properties work against the bacteria while the antioxidant properties are a natural anti-inflammatory.

Honey, as you will have noticed, comes in many different types and in many different shades of color ranging from light gold to a dark, almost brown. The rule of thumb is simple: the darker the color, the stronger the antibiotic and antioxidant punch it is going to deliver. Raw honey is better than filtered honey, and arguably the most potent form of honey is Manuka honey that comes from New Zealand.

However, if you can’t get hold of Manuka, don’t be put off using what you’ve got or what you can get. Here’s what you do: moisten your face slightly with a little water and then, with your damp hands, spread the honey gently onto your face or affected area to form a mask.

Leave the honey on for 20-30 minutes, although longer than that is also fine, before washing off with warm water. If you like, you can also add a pinch or two of cinnamon, a natural antimicrobial, to the honey. The only thing to be careful of is that honey has a habit of being runny – so don’t use too much at once if you don’t want it in your hair and dripping down your neck!

Banana Peel

Long valued by the slapstick comedy movie industry for their effortless ability to generate a cheap laugh, banana peels also provide an effortless ability to help treat acne. That’s because banana peels contains a powerful antioxidant called lutein that acts as both an anti-inflammatory agent and also reduces swelling.

In addition, banana peels are rich in potassium which boosts the natural healing process of the skin. In fact, studies have shown a direct correlation, especially in adolescents, between acne and potassium deficiency.

Here’s what you do: simply rub the banana peel gently over your face or affected area and leave it there for 30 minutes. Then wash with warm water.

Orange Peel

Orange peel contains not only vitamin C, which has properties that help promote healthy skin cell growth and rejuvenation, it also contains citric acid that works both to destroy bacteria and to cause the skin tissues to contract.

Here’s what you do: chop up the orange peel, place in a blender with a splash of water, blend it into a paste, and apply the paste to your face or affected area. After 20-30 minutes, wash it off.


Papayas contain papain, an enzyme that is a natural and strong anti-inflammatory. In addition, papain dissolves proteins (including dead skin cells that block pores and mix with sebum to cause acne outbreaks) and is a key ingredient in many anti-aging creams.

Here’s what you do: crush and pulp the papaya flesh into a smooth mash, apply it to your face or affected area, and leave it there for 20 minutes before washing off.


Potatoes are rich in vitamin C as well as potassium – the advantages of which we’ve already discussed, above. In addition, though, and importantly, although potatoes are chemically acidic, potato skins are the opposite – they are alkaline.

The alkaline properties of potato skins operates as a natural remover of sebum from the skins pores. Here’s what you do (the quick method): slice a raw potato near its skin, rub the slice over your face or affected area, let it dry before washing with warm water.

Here’s what you do (the slightly longer method); grate or pulp the raw potato including its skin, apply the grated/pulped slices and the potato juices onto your face or affected area, leave it there for 30 minutes or so and wash off.

Egg Whites

Egg whites possess a number of important properties that make it a natural acne treatment. For one thing, they contain an enzyme called lysozyme – and if there’s one thing that lysozyme enjoys doing most it is digesting the cell wall of bacteria that cause acne.

In addition, egg whites are rich in riboflavin, otherwise known as vitamin B2, which works to eliminate free radicals that damage skin cells and spread acne. What’s more, amino acids in egg whites are a natural skin tightener and work to shrink the pores in your skin and reduce sebum.

Here’s what you do: whisk a couple of egg whites until frothy, apply the frothed egg white to your face or affected area, allow to dry for 20-30 minutes (you’ll feel you skin tightening, but don’t worry, that is meant to happen and is all part of the treatment), and then wash off with warm water.

Baking Soda

The humble baking soda not only contains anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, it is also incredibly effective for removing excess oils from the skin and for drying out pores.

Here’s what you do: mix half a cup of baking soda with a quarter cup of water, mix to form a smooth paste, apply the paste to your face or affected area to form a mask, leave it in place for 10-20 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

2. Liquid Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has huge antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. In addition, it is an alkaline and is therefore a natural acne treatment for reducing oily skin and removing sebum.

Here’s what you do: dilute the apple cider vinegar with water (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar), apply directly to your face or affected are by dabbing it on with a cotton pad, leave it for 5-10 minutes before washing off with warm water.

Green Tea

Green tea contains a super-sized dosage of antioxidants called flavenoids which work together to reduce bacteria, inflammation, and the production of sebum. Here’s what you do: put green tea (either leaves or a tea bag) in a cup, pour over half a cup of boiling water, wait until the tea is cool, and apply to your face or affected area with a cotton pad.

Tea Tree Oil

OK, you my have to go a little further than your local grocery store for this, but it is an incredible and fast natural essential oil remedy for treating acne pimples. Tea tree oil contains a powerful anti-bacterial agent called terpinen-4-ol.

In addition, tea tree oil actually dissolves sebum by breaking down its cell walls thereby unblocking pores. Here’s what you do: dilute 1 part of tea tree oil with 9 parts water and apply to affected areas gently with a cotton pad. Warning: do NOT apply tea tree oil undiluted!

As we said at the start, these remedies may not have received the same research dollars as synthetic products. However, let’s give the guys in the white lab coats a day off. Plus, these natural acne treatment methods will be easier on your wallet, and on your skin.

Vitamins For Acne

Vitamin A and Omega-3 Fatty Acids do not have side effects because they are natural. You should have them in your system already.

Vitamin A
